Orbital vector: a side-profile depth measurement, not a front-facing one.

Orbital vector comes up constantly in looksmaxxing threads, usually alongside disagreement about how to even see it in a photo. Before trusting any self-read, it's worth knowing what the term describes and why the camera angle it needs is different from most face-rating readings.

What the term actually describes

Orbital vector compares how far the eye socket bone (the infraorbital rim) sits relative to the front of the eye itself, viewed from the side:

  • Positive vector — the bone and surrounding soft tissue sit forward of the eye.
  • Negative vector — the eye sits forward of the bone, reading as more sunken or hollow.

It's a depth relationship between two structures, not a distance and not a size in absolute units — and soft tissue at the rim moves it as much as the bone underneath does, which is part of why forum threads on the term rarely agree on how to self-assess it from a photo.

Why a front-facing camera can't read it

The relationship orbital vector describes sits on the depth axis of the face — the same axis a straight-on camera view compresses the most:

  • A full-frontal shot flattens the socket-to-eye relationship into the outline of the face, where the actual forward/back offset isn't visible.
  • Reading it requires a genuine side profile, where the rim and the front of the eye can be compared against each other in depth.
