What the term actually describes
ZygoNasal distance is a profile-view measurement of maxillary projection: how far the cheekbone (zygomatic) region sits forward relative to the nasal radix, the bridge's starting point between the eyes. Looksmax.org discussion classifies it in bands:
- Under 5mm — "Giga-Flat Maxilla."
- 5-10mm — "Flat Maxilla."
- 10-15mm — "Medium Maxillary Projection."
- 15-20mm — "Forward-Grown Maxilla."
- Over 20mm — "Giga-Forward-Grown Maxilla."
It's a differential between two profile landmarks, not a size or projection reading of the cheekbone by itself.
A metric the community argues about internally
Most looksmax threads talk about cheekbone projection as "forward zygos" — a single-point read of how far the cheekbone itself sits forward. A separate, dedicated looksmax.org thread pushes back on that framing directly, arguing forward zygos in isolation is overrated and that zygonasal distance — the differential against the nasal radix, not the cheekbone's forwardness alone — is the more meaningful number.
That's a genuine methodological disagreement inside the same community, not a settled consensus: one framing treats a single structure's position as the whole story, the other says the reference point it's measured against changes what the number means. Neither side of that argument is resolved by a photo taken from the wrong angle.
Why a front-facing camera can't read it
Both landmarks in the comparison sit on the depth axis of the face — the same axis a straight-on camera view compresses the most:
- A full-frontal shot flattens the zygomatic-to-radix offset into the face's outline, where the actual forward/back difference isn't visible.
- Reading it needs a genuine side profile, where the two landmarks can be compared against each other in depth.
