What the term actually describes
The buccal fat pad is a deep fat deposit in the lower cheek, sitting between the cheekbone and the jawline. What it looks like from the outside:
- Less volume — a leaner, more hollowed, more angular cheek, with cheekbones and jaw reading more separated.
- More volume — a fuller, rounder cheek, often described as a softer or more "baby-faced" look.
It's a depth and volume trait that lives in the soft tissue itself — not a distance between two points on the face's outline, which is the category every ratio Mogalytics computes falls into.
Why no landmark-geometry tool can read it
Face-landmark models place points on the visible surface of the face and compute distances or angles between those points. That approach works for a width, a height, or an angle — it does not work for buccal fat, because:
- Fat-pad volume changes how the surface between two landmarks curves, not where the landmarks themselves sit.
- Two faces can share the exact same cheekbone-to-jaw width and still carry very different amounts of hollowing underneath that outline.
- Reading depth this way generally needs a 3D scan or a side-lit still that reveals shadow contour — a flat set of 2D landmark coordinates has no depth channel to draw on.

Where this fits next to what Mogalytics actually reads
Mogalytics does not compute or display a buccal fat or hollow-cheek number, and it can't — the trait falls outside what any landmark-geometry ratio measures. The closest of its six measurements by region is:
- Cheekbone ratio — the only one of the six anchored to the cheek, but it's a width proportion (cheek width divided by jaw width), not a measure of fat coverage or depth.
A high or low cheekbone ratio says nothing about how much buccal fat sits underneath it — a wide-cheekbone face can be either hollow or full, and so can a narrow-cheekbone one. Mogalytics makes no claim of parity between the two.
