Buccal corridor: a trait that only exists mid-smile.

Buccal corridor comes up constantly in looksmaxxing threads about "full" versus "narrow" smiles. Before reading anything into a self-rating tool's number on it, it's worth knowing this one can't appear in a neutral-expression reading at all — not because it's hard to measure, but because the trait itself doesn't exist yet in that state.

What the term actually describes

The buccal corridor is the dark negative space visible between the back upper teeth and the inside of the cheek during a wide smile:

  • Narrow corridor — teeth fill most of the visible mouth width, read as a "fuller," broader smile.
  • Wide corridor — more dark space at the corners, read as narrower or more recessed.

Orthodontic literature ties it to dental arch width and, more loosely, to maxillary and zygomatic development — but the space itself is only visible once the mouth opens into a smile wide enough to expose it.

Why it can't show up in a neutral-expression reading

Every other expression-related page on this site describes a trait that exists at rest and gets skewed by expression — lip ratio shifts a few millimeters if the lips compress mid-speech, but the vermillion border is still there to measure either way.

Buccal corridor is a step further than that: with the mouth closed and relaxed, there is no dark space between teeth and cheek to measure at all. The geometry the term describes simply hasn't come into existence yet — it isn't distorted, it's absent.

That same instruction is precisely why buccal corridor can never appear in the result — a smile mid-capture is flagged there as a source of noise to avoid, not an input to read.

A wide cheekbone ratio doesn't predict a narrow buccal corridor or vice versa — dental arch width and zygomatic width are related but separate variables. Mogalytics makes no claim of parity between the two.
