What the term actually describes
Lip ratio divides the vertical height of the upper lip's vermillion — the pink, non-hair-bearing tissue between the philtrum and the mouth opening — by the same measurement on the lower lip. A commonly cited Caucasian aesthetic norm places the ratio near 1:1.6 (upper smaller than lower), a figure that appears in peer-reviewed orthodontic review literature, not just forum threads.
It's a proportion between two segments on one face, the same kind of comparison as chin-to-philtrum ratio, not a comparison against an external template.
Why the quoted "ideal" varies so much between sources
Two separate problems compound here, and most discussions only account for the first:
- Population. A clinical study reviewing lip measurements outside Caucasian samples found an upper-to-lower height ratio closer to 1:1.08 — far tighter than the 1:1.6 figure, evidence the "ideal" is one population's average, not a universal target.
- Definition. Some sources measure vermillion height in millimeters; others measure vermillion area in a frontal photo. One study of Miss Korea contestants reported an upper-to-lower area ratio near 0.75, against roughly 0.85 in the general comparison population — a different quantity from a height ratio entirely, so the two numbers were never comparable in the first place.
A single quoted figure rarely states which quantity it measured or on which population — the same caution this site applies to philtrum length's wide millimeter spread.
Why expression, not camera optics, is this measurement's real confound
Every other "why a single photo distorts this" page on this site names an optics problem: camera angle for the bridge, camera distance for midface, head pitch or turn for jaw and cheek. Lips share that problem, but a bigger one sits underneath it.
The vermillion border isn't a fixed bony landmark — it's the edge of soft tissue held in position by the orbicularis oris muscle. Compressing the lips, mid-speech movement, or even a faint smile shifts that border, independent of any camera variable at all.
Interestingly, one orthodontic study found the upper-to-lower vermillion ratio stayed roughly stable in patients through extraction-based treatment — a sign the underlying proportion is tied to real anatomy, not just momentary posture. That makes a single resting-neutral reading meaningfully more trustworthy than a mid-expression one, the opposite problem a bony-landmark ratio has.
