What the term actually describes
Philtrum length is the vertical groove and segment running from the base of the nose down to the top of the upper lip:
- Short philtrum — reads as more youthful and balanced in the lower-face threads that discuss it.
- Long philtrum — commonly discussed as an aging marker, since the philtrum lengthens gradually with age.
That's different from chin-to-philtrum ratio, which compares this same segment against the chin below it. Philtrum length on its own is usually quoted as a single absolute number in millimeters, not a proportion between two segments.
Why the quoted "ideal" number varies so widely
Figures circulating for philtrum length differ by a wide margin depending on the source:
- Looksmax.org threads commonly cite roughly 11-13mm for women, 13-15mm for men.
- Aesthetic-medicine sources citing clinical lip-measurement research put youthful norms closer to 20mm for women, 22mm for men.
- A peer-reviewed anthropometric study of Indonesian adults found lip proportions, including philtrum length, differ by population — classical norms drawn mostly from North American samples don't necessarily generalize.
A near-double spread between commonly cited figures is a sign the sources are measuring different landmark boundaries on different populations, not a settled clinical target — the same caution chin-to-philtrum ratio already applies to its own quoted range.
Why no ratio-based camera tool can output this number
Every measurement Mogalytics reads is a ratio — a proportion between two on-face distances, like jaw height relative to total face height. Ratios cancel out unknown camera distance and lens, which is exactly why a live camera feed can read them at all. An absolute length in millimeters is a different problem:
- It requires knowing the real-world scale of the image — a fixed, known camera-to-face distance, a calibration object of known size in frame, or stereo depth sensing.
- A single flat webcam frame at an unknown distance can't resolve that scale on its own — the identical pixel gap between two landmarks represents a different number of real millimeters depending on how close you're sitting.
So even a tool that placed the columella and vermillion-border landmarks perfectly still couldn't hand back a trustworthy millimeter figure without a calibration step most self-rating tools, Mogalytics included, don't run at all.

Mogalytics does not compute or display a philtrum length in millimeters, for the scale reason above. The closest existing pages are:
