What the term actually describes
Chin-to-philtrum ratio compares two adjacent vertical segments in the lower third of the face:
- Philtrum — the short vertical stretch from the base of the nose down to the top of the upper lip.
- Chin — from the bottom of the lower lip down to the point of the chin.
It's a proportion between those two segments, not an absolute measurement in millimeters — and unlike gonial angle, both segments sit on the front of the face, so in principle a straight-on photo can capture them.
Why the quoted "ideal" number varies
Community threads and photo-analysis calculators commonly cite a chin-to-philtrum ratio somewhere in the rough range of 2:1 to 2.5:1, though individual sources land on different exact figures:
- Different calculators place the philtrum's lower boundary and the chin's upper boundary at slightly different points on the lip.
- A single photo's angle, lighting, and expression can shift where those boundary points appear to land.
That spread is a reason to treat any single quoted target as a rough reference point circulating across forums and tools, not a precise, universally agreed number — the same caution this site applies to any specific ELO or score figure discussed on the tiers page.
